All the relevant buttons and controls for navigating the VR environment in UbiSim

Updated over a month ago

UbiSim’s controls are designed for simplicity, but if you’re new to VR, they may still take some getting used to. We suggest trying Meta’s First Steps app to get comfortable with VR before using UbiSim. Now, let’s explore how the controls work in UbiSim!

Touch

Many things in UbiSim can be interacted with simply via touch - this includes buttons on the EHR, bed controls, phone, and quit menu on the back of your hand. Your virtual finger will automatically adjust to a ‘pointed’ pose as you approach touchable buttons.

💡Tip: If you feel a button is not responding - try reaching a little further. You may find your judgement of distance needs a little adjusting in VR.

Touch: Nursing Assessments

Touch-based nursing assessments have an additional step.

  1. Raise your hands up in front of you with your palms towards your face. Menus will appear over each hand with different hand pose options for palpation, pulse and more.

  2. Use one hand to select the hand pose on the opposite hand’s menu. Both hands will now switch to that pose.

  3. Now go ahead and touch the pulsing points that appear on the patient to perform that assessment!

Grabbing Objects

Many actions can be done in UbiSim simply by picking up a piece of equipment and either holding it near or releasing it on a specific location. It generally works how it would in real life!

  1. Hover your hand over the object you want to grab. It will be outlined in blue when your hand is close enough.

  2. Squeeze the grip button on the side of your controller to grab the object. Continue to squeeze to keep holding the object.

  3. Approach the object to a pulsing interaction point or zone. You will receive an immediate result, or may need to release the object.

💡Note: You can also grab handles on items like the EKG machine, patient monitor, and floating EHR. Simply grab and move them closer or farther from you as needed.

Moving the Patient

The arms and legs of the patients (except the infant) can be grabbed as with other objects. This is useful for checking clonus reflex and the ID bracelet. You can also move the patient into a few poses.

  1. Hover your hand over the patient’s shoulder. A blue arrow will appear pointing in the direction the patient will be moved.

  2. Grab the arrow (using the grip button) and pull in the direction it points.

  3. The patient will sit up or turn according to the arrow direction.

Moving Around the Room

In UbiSim, you can access most items without moving from your starting point. For things that are further away, such as across the other side of the bed, don’t walk - teleport! Teleporting is used in VR because it avoids motion sickness by instantly placing you in a new location.

  1. Push the thumbstick on either controller forward (you don’t need to use both) to begin aiming. This will show available teleport locations.

  2. Aim at your desired location to highlight it.

  3. Release the thumbstick. You will instantly move to the new location.
