Suggested Timeline and Activities for a Simulation Day

You will be able to find additional information on how to run structured clinical experience with UbiSim here.

Updated yesterday

To follow best practice standards, UbiSim scenarios should be used as part of a simulation-based learning experience that includes pre-simulation learning activities, pre-briefing, and debriefing.

Pre-simulation learning activities:

Should be assigned ahead of time so learners can prepare for the simulation experience

  1. Assigned readings from course textbooks, journal articles, or videos that relate to the scenario objectives and topic

  2. Review of simulation scenario learning objectives

  3. Review of the scenario briefing, medications, and documents

  4. Skills review activities

  5. Required assignments, such as a clinical worksheet

The Simulation Day

A general timeline for a 3-hour simulation-based experience is as follows:

  1. Pre-briefing (will need to be extended for new learners getting oriented to the equipment) ⏲️30mn*

  2. Engage in the patient scenario(s) ⏲️20mn*

  3. Review the Scenario Feedback ⏲️30mn*

  4. Attend a synchronous or asynchronous debriefing session ⏲️40mn*

  5. Complete post-simulation activities (eg. concept map, documentation exercises, worksheets) ⏲️60mn*

Pre-briefing

Establish psychological safety and set facilitator and learner expectations for the day. This is an excellent time to review the scenario learning objectives and briefing. Facilitators can also have an interactive discussion with participants to prepare them for the scenario. Learners new to UbiSim should have a dedicated orientation to the equipment and should participate in the Tutorial scenarios as appropriate. Even if the learners are experienced with VR, all should review the Meta Quest Health and Safety Information prior to participating in the scenario to support a safe learning experience.
