Health and Safety in VR and Oculus

Updated this week

The health and safety warnings below are included to highlight some of the hazards you should be aware of and the appropriate precautions that you should take.

Please review this section carefully and access the complete list of health and safety warnings below.

  1. Before putting on the headset, check your environment for safety and that the space is free of obstacles. Use caution to avoid injury and allow sufficient space all around and above you for full-body motion.

  2. Make sure the headset is secured comfortably on your head and that the image is clear.

  3. Make sure the headset cable is not choking or becoming a tripping hazard.

  4. Always use wrist straps to secure the controller to your wrist during the simulation.

  5. When using the headset, you will lose the ability to see and hear what is actually around you.

  6. Make sure that the volume within the headset is set so that you can maintain awareness of your surroundings and reduce the risk of hearing damage if too loud.

  7. A safe VR experience requires an unimpaired sense of motion and balance. Do not use the headset when you are: tired; unwell; or under the influence of alcohol or drugs as this can increase your susceptibility to adverse symptoms.

  8. Stop use if you experience any discomfort.

  9. Take at least 15 minutes to break every 30 minutes, even if you don't think you need it. Each person is different, so take more frequent and longer breaks if you feel discomfort.
